Most herbal products start with a purchase order. Ours start with seeds, soil, and a deep relationship with the plants.
Herbal Revolution is a farm-to-bottle business. Literally.
We grow many of the herbs we use on our certified organic, no-till farm in Union, Maine, harvest them at their peak, and process them fresh when the formula calls for it. Our drying room and cGMP-compliant manufacturing facility are just two miles down the road. This is where the plants we grow become tinctures, tonics, teas, oils, and elixirs and where those products are bottled, labeled, packed, and sent out to you.
That is vertical integration.
Vertical integration is when one company owns and operates multiple consecutive stages that would otherwise be handled by separate businesses. In herbal products, that can include cultivation, post-harvest processing, formulation, manufacturing, quality oversight, fulfillment, and sales.
For us, it means something more personal. We are not simply a brand that sells herbal products. We are the farmers, herbalists, makers, quality team, and shippers behind them.
I have been farming, formulating, wildcrafting, processing, teaching, selling, and learning from plants for thirty years. One thing continues to be clear to me: you cannot separate the quality of what is in the bottle from the quality of what is happening in the soil.
They are connected.
The conditions in which a plant grows, the moment it is harvested, how it is handled afterward, and the method used to extract it all shape the finished medicine. When those stages are separated among growers, brokers, suppliers, and manufacturers, knowledge can be lost at every handoff.
Vertical integration allows us to keep those stages connected. We know the soil, the plants, the harvest, the formulas, and the processes used to make them. That continuity is what makes our model different, and it begins in the field.
We grow more than sixty specialty crops on our small farm. We source seeds and seedlings from companies and growers we trust, including Fedco, Strictly Medicinals, Sheepscot Farm, Dharma Farm, and Hillcrest.
We farm regeneratively, which to us means working with the land and its natural systems. Our no-till beds, heavy mulching system, green living pathways, and cover crops help protect and feed the soil between growing seasons. Soil is a living system, and it needs to be treated as such.
Because we grow these plants ourselves, I know when the motherwort is at its most vibrant for fresh tincturing. I know when the tulsi, lemon balm, and chamomile are at their peak. I know that moment when I am walking through the field and it smells and looks like magic.
Some plants want to be harvested before flowering. Roots are often best in early spring or fall, after the plant has drawn its energy back down. Flowers, leaves, and seeds each have their own window. Honoring that window is one of the most fundamental parts of making good herbal medicine.
A plant grown in depleted soil, harvested before its time, or extracted without a deep understanding of herbal medicine will not yield the same medicine as one grown, harvested, and extracted with knowledge and attention. The difference is real, and it matters.
Being vertically integrated means that our responsibility does not end when a plant leaves the field.
Nearly everything on our farm is done by hand. Our farm team plants, tends, and weeds through heat, humidity, and black-fly season. Harvesting can mean bending over a row for hours or digging roots from the ground.
From there, our production team chops and weighs fresh plants for tincturing or lays them out to dry before garbling them by hand. Depending on the product, they press and filter the plant material, prepare the formula, and bottle, label, and box the finished product.
These can be long, physical days of lifting, carrying, pouring, standing, and repeating careful movements for hours. The work takes strength and stamina, but also concentration. The right ingredient, weight, process, record, and label matter at every stage.
Behind each batch, our quality team checks ingredients, records, weights, and labels, oversees sanitation, and confirms that the product meets the standards we have set. Every input on our farm is documented. Every field has a history. Every batch of product is traceable.
Most of that work is invisible when you open a bottle, but it is a large part of what makes the bottle trustworthy.
Because our team is small, people also understand more than one part of the process. The person photographing a product, answering a customer's question, or packing a bottle may also have weeded the beds, joined the harvest, garbled dried herbs, or helped in production. The people handling the finished products are not separate from the people who understand the plants.
We are not only maintaining quality control at each stage. We are building a shared understanding of what each stage actually requires.
We cannot grow everything.
Maine's climate, our four acres in cultivation, and our own human limits mean that some ingredients in our formulas, such as turmeric and ginger, cannot be grown here at the scale we need.
When we cannot grow something ourselves, we source from a small network of certified organic farms, including Stonecipher Farm, Buckle Farm, and Hernandez Farm. We also work with trusted suppliers, and every herb we purchase is evaluated through our quality program before it is approved for use.
Vertical integration does not mean isolation or pretending every ingredient came from our own fields. It means being honest about what we grow and what we source, and maintaining clear standards when part of the chain extends beyond our farm.
As a clinically trained herbalist with three decades of practice, I formulate every product with a reason for each ingredient and a purpose for each ratio. Different plants and preparations require different methods. The decisions made during formulation and extraction affect what ends up in the bottle.
Because we formulate and manufacture our own products, that knowledge does not disappear into a specification sent to a contract manufacturer. It stays connected to the people making each batch.
As a manufacturer, we follow the regulations and current Good Manufacturing Practices required for dietary supplements. That means written procedures, batch records, quality systems, sanitation controls, and traceability. USDA Certified Organic and Real Organic also mean annual inspections, documentation, and accountability.
These systems do not replace knowledge and care. They document the work, create consistency, and help us carry responsibility from the field through the finished product.
When the herbs remain in our care between harvest and finished product, there are fewer places for quality, knowledge, and accountability to get lost.
Our connection to a product does not end when it is bottled. Our team manages our
direct ecommerce sales, wholesale relationships, customer service, and fulfillment, working with outside distribution partners where needed. For orders leaving our facility directly, we pick, wrap, pack, and ship each one ourselves.
Keeping these parts of the business close matters for more than logistics. When a customer or retailer has a question, it reaches people who know the products and understand how they were grown and made. Questions and feedback can also travel back to our production and quality teams rather than stopping with a separate sales company or brand owner.
That creates a direct line between the people growing and making our products and the people using them.
You cannot speed up the growing season. You cannot outsource thirty years of formulation knowledge. You cannot replicate the relationship between our land, the varieties we grow, the people who tend them, and our processing methods without risking the very thing that makes the medicine what it is.
Conventional scaling often means adding suppliers, handoffs, and manufacturing facilities. Our model has different constraints. Plants grow on their own timelines. Land and people have limits. Growth has to account for soil health, product quality, and the capacity of the people doing the work.
That does not mean we do not want to grow. It means we focus on sustainable growth without separating the product from the knowledge and care that make it ours.
Vertical integration, for us, is not a growth strategy. It is a values strategy.
